THE TREATMENT

What M22 IPL is and how it works

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not a laser. Where lasers emit a single wavelength of focused light, the M22 delivers broad-spectrum pulses across multiple wavelengths simultaneously, allowing it to target both pigment and redness in the same treatment session.

The light energy is selectively absorbed by the specific chromophores we are targeting: melanin in brown spots and sun damage, and haemoglobin in visible blood vessels and redness. The targeted tissue absorbs the light, heats up, and breaks down. Your body's lymphatic system then naturally clears the debris over the following days and weeks.

As an added benefit, the controlled light energy stimulates your skin's collagen production, improving overall skin texture and tone beyond just the targeted pigment and vessels.

How a single session works

01

Skin assessment and filter selection

Your provider assesses your skin type, pigment depth, and concern type. The M22 filter is selected to match your specific target, different filters optimize for pigment vs vascular concerns.

02

Protective eyewear and cooling gel applied

Your eyes are protected with opaque shields. A cool gel is applied to the skin to help the light penetrate and keep you comfortable throughout the session.

03

IPL pulses delivered across the treatment area

The M22 handpiece moves across your skin delivering controlled light pulses. Most patients describe a mild snapping sensation. The session takes 20 to 30 minutes for the face.

04

Pigment darkens before it clears

In the days following treatment, brown spots will temporarily darken and may look like coffee grounds before naturally flaking off. This is expected and a normal part of the process.

05

Clearer skin emerges over 1 to 2 weeks

As the treated pigment clears, skin tone becomes progressively more even. Redness and capillaries fade as treated vessels are reabsorbed. Collagen stimulation continues for weeks.

SKIN CONCERNS

What M22 IPL treats in London, Ontario

One of the key advantages of the M22 platform is its ability to address multiple concerns in the same session. Most patients come in for sun spots and leave also noticing improvement in redness, capillaries, and overall skin tone.

Sun Spots & Age Spots

Flat brown spots caused by cumulative UV exposure. IPL targets the concentrated melanin directly, breaking it down for natural clearance. Most patients see significant fading within 1 to 2 sessions.

Superficial epidermal pigment responds very well to IPL. Freckles lighten or disappear across a series of treatments, with results sustained through consistent sun protection.

Dark marks left by acne, eczema, or skin trauma. IPL can effectively reduce PIH when the underlying inflammatory cause has been addressed first.

Diffuse discolouration and blotchiness from years of UV exposure responds well across a series of sessions, leaving skin looking more even and luminous overall.

IPL targets haemoglobin in the blood vessels responsible for persistent redness and flushing, reducing the appearance of rosacea and diffuse facial redness significantly across sessions.

Visible small blood vessels on the nose, cheeks, and chin are treated by targeting the haemoglobin within them, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed naturally by the body.

IPL is particularly effective for reversing sun damage on the neck and chest, areas that accumulate decades of UV exposure and are often neglected in treatment plans.

Beyond targeted pigment and vessels, M22 IPL stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture, reducing fine lines, and leaving skin looking brighter and more youthful overall.

What to Expect

Your M22 IPL treatment timeline. Session by session.

Sun damage accumulates across multiple layers of the skin. One session addresses the most superficial deposits — but meaningful, lasting correction requires a structured series. Here is what to expect at each stage.

Session 1

First treatment

Immediate result: skin may look slightly red, like a mild sunburn. Brown spots darken to a coffee-ground texture in the days following. This is normal and a sign the treatment is working. Spots begin to flake off within 5 to 10 days.

Wk 1–2

After first session

Treated pigment flakes off naturally revealing clearer skin beneath. Redness typically fades within 24 to 72 hours. Overall skin tone looks noticeably more even. Collagen stimulation continues beneath the surface.

Sessions 2–3

Spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart

Each session targets the next layer of pigment as the skin regenerates. Tone becomes progressively more even. Redness, capillaries, and remaining brown spots continue to fade. Most patients see their most dramatic improvement between sessions 2 and 3.

Sessions 4–5

Completion and maintenance

Full results visible after completing the recommended series. Skin looks brighter, more even, and more youthful. Annual maintenance sessions sustain results — combined with daily SPF to prevent new sun damage accumulating.

Does IPL hurt?

Most patients describe each pulse as a mild snapping sensation, similar to a rubber band against the skin. The M22's Optimal Pulse Technology makes it significantly more comfortable than older IPL devices. No numbing is typically required. The session is 20 to 45 minutes and the sensation ends immediately after each pulse.

This is a completely normal and expected part of the process. The IPL has fragmented the melanin in the spot, and as it rises to the surface before flaking off, it appears darker temporarily. Spots typically darken for 3 to 7 days before naturally clearing. Do not pick at them — let them flake on their own.

For meaningful correction of sun spots and pigmentation, 3 to 5 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart is the clinical standard. Sun damage accumulates across multiple skin layers, and each session addresses the next layer as the skin regenerates. One session produces noticeable improvement — but the full result requires a series.

Results from a completed IPL series are long-lasting, but not permanent. New sun exposure will create new sun damage. Maintaining results requires consistent daily SPF and periodic maintenance sessions — typically once or twice per year. Patients who commit to daily sun protection see results last significantly longer.

The M22 is validated for Fitzpatrick I through V with adjusted settings for darker tones. However, very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI) require careful assessment as there is less contrast between background skin and the target, increasing the risk of unintended pigment changes. A consultation is required to confirm suitability for your specific skin tone.

Yes, with the right precautions. You must avoid all sun exposure for 4 weeks before treatment and apply SPF 50 every 2 hours outdoors after treatment. If you have an active tan or recent sun exposure, your appointment will need to be rescheduled. Patients who can commit to strict sun avoidance can safely receive IPL year-round.

Lasers emit a single focused wavelength that targets one specific concern precisely. IPL delivers multiple wavelengths simultaneously, making it better suited for treating both pigment and redness in the same session across a larger area. For isolated, deep, or stubborn individual spots, a laser like the Nd:YAG may be more effective. Your provider will recommend the right modality at your consultation.
