IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not a laser. Where lasers emit a single wavelength of focused light, the M22 delivers broad-spectrum pulses across multiple wavelengths simultaneously, allowing it to target both pigment and redness in the same treatment session.
The light energy is selectively absorbed by the specific chromophores we are targeting: melanin in brown spots and sun damage, and haemoglobin in visible blood vessels and redness. The targeted tissue absorbs the light, heats up, and breaks down. Your body's lymphatic system then naturally clears the debris over the following days and weeks.
As an added benefit, the controlled light energy stimulates your skin's collagen production, improving overall skin texture and tone beyond just the targeted pigment and vessels.
Skin assessment and filter selection
Your provider assesses your skin type, pigment depth, and concern type. The M22 filter is selected to match your specific target, different filters optimize for pigment vs vascular concerns.
Protective eyewear and cooling gel applied
Your eyes are protected with opaque shields. A cool gel is applied to the skin to help the light penetrate and keep you comfortable throughout the session.
IPL pulses delivered across the treatment area
The M22 handpiece moves across your skin delivering controlled light pulses. Most patients describe a mild snapping sensation. The session takes 20 to 30 minutes for the face.
Pigment darkens before it clears
In the days following treatment, brown spots will temporarily darken and may look like coffee grounds before naturally flaking off. This is expected and a normal part of the process.
Clearer skin emerges over 1 to 2 weeks
As the treated pigment clears, skin tone becomes progressively more even. Redness and capillaries fade as treated vessels are reabsorbed. Collagen stimulation continues for weeks.
One of the key advantages of the M22 platform is its ability to address multiple concerns in the same session. Most patients come in for sun spots and leave also noticing improvement in redness, capillaries, and overall skin tone.
Sun damage accumulates across multiple layers of the skin. One session addresses the most superficial deposits — but meaningful, lasting correction requires a structured series. Here is what to expect at each stage.
Session 1
Immediate result: skin may look slightly red, like a mild sunburn. Brown spots darken to a coffee-ground texture in the days following. This is normal and a sign the treatment is working. Spots begin to flake off within 5 to 10 days.
Wk 1–2
Treated pigment flakes off naturally revealing clearer skin beneath. Redness typically fades within 24 to 72 hours. Overall skin tone looks noticeably more even. Collagen stimulation continues beneath the surface.
Sessions 2–3
Each session targets the next layer of pigment as the skin regenerates. Tone becomes progressively more even. Redness, capillaries, and remaining brown spots continue to fade. Most patients see their most dramatic improvement between sessions 2 and 3.
Sessions 4–5
Full results visible after completing the recommended series. Skin looks brighter, more even, and more youthful. Annual maintenance sessions sustain results — combined with daily SPF to prevent new sun damage accumulating.
