What are the benefits of using Belkyra™?

What is Belkyra™ and how does it work?
Belkyra™ is a patented formulation of deoxycholic acid manufactured by Allergan, the makers of BOTOX®. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies used to digest fat in our diets. Belkyra™destroys the fats membrane, allowing the chin fat to be expelled out of the body, helping to get rid of a double chin without surgery.
What areas can be treated with Belkyra™?
Belkyra™ is Health Canada approved to be used on the double chin area. Other areas can be treated; however, the effectiveness and safety have not been studied or approved.
What types of results can I anticipate from Belkyra™?
Results vary from person to person and multiple sessions are recommended (if the fatty deposit is larger) to gradually reduce the unwanted chin fat. As the body expels the chin fat, slimming of the area occurs over the next 8 weeks. An added benefit is tightening of the overlying skin in most cases.
How many treatments are recommended?
- 2 to 5 sessions
- Repeat chin injections every 6 to 8 weeks with Belkyra™
How long will results last?
Results are permanent; however, excessive weight gain can diminish the results.
What can I expect during my appointment?
Once your provider maps and ices the treatment area, they will make multiple quick injections with Belkyra™. You may experience some swelling, numbness, bruising and/or tingling in the treatment area. Your treatment time will be less than 45 minutes.
When can I return to normal activity and what can I expect post treatment?
- Resume normal activities immediately post treatment
- Avoid any strenuous exercise immediately post treatment
Who should not have Belkyra™ treatment?
Belkyra™treatment is not recommended for use in pregnant or lactating women, anyone with a history of an allergic reaction and/or who are hypersensitive to the medication or any of its active ingredients (deoxycholic acid, benzyl alcohol, dibasic sodium phosphate, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide), as well as anyone with infected or inflamed skin, bleeding disorders, individuals with a tendency to produce excessive scarring such as keloids and/or hypertrophic scars, unrealistic expectations, excessive skin laxity, autoimmune diseases, vascular disease, and conditions that cause delayed healing.
What are the side effects of Belkyra™ treatment?
- Swelling, possible bruising and itching
- Possible tingling, pins and needles, numbness or pain
- Possible temporary nodules under the skin
- Although rare, a temporary asymmetrical smile
